Seven years ago, I realized I needed to make a big life shift. I was 40 lbs overweight, my adrenals where shot, I struggled with fatigue everyday and I had more problems then I had answers. Although I would find great new strategies around a diet or new actions I should be taking in my relationship and career, I just couldn’t get myself motivated to stay on track with my new goals. I would start out great, but end up falling short and feeling like a failure.
It was then I realized it wasn’t my relationships, food or not knowing enough strategies that was getting in my way. It was me. After all, I was the ONLY common denominator. I realized I had been sabotaging my efforts at change. As I got honest with myself, I could see that I needed to begin healing from my past and how I felt about myself in order to make the change. I knew my stubbornness was keeping me stuck and if I didn’t address the reasons WHY I was not happy, then no matter what strategy I tried to follow I would end up failing.
Here is what I found on why most people never really change…
When you want to manifest a new life, you must first heal from your past. You see there is a reason you are holding on to the old life and not moving forward. In psychotherapy we call it repetition compulsion. It is the compulsion to repeat a pattern in a way where we might just find some healing. In other words, we are trying to heal by repeating the habit and hoping it ends up differently. Sounds maddening, right?
The challenge is your mind is caught in a negative loop where you cannot see the new life until you resolve whatever has been effecting the way you see yourself and your possible future. Although you may not be doing this consciously, what I know from the field of psychology is the unconscious is what is really running the show.
When you are looking to define a new way of being — in health, in relationships or your career — it will require a deeper level of exploring and healing your past.
